Dilophosaurus (literally "double‑crested lizard") is a medium‑sized theropod from the Early Jurassic, often dated to about 190 million years ago. Known from partial skeletons recovered in the American Southwest, it is notable for a pair of thin, arched cranial crests and for its importance in understanding how early large meat‑eating dinosaurs evolved.

Physical characteristics

Fossils indicate a lightly built, long‑limbed biped with a narrow skull, recurved serrated teeth and a long tail for balance. The paired crests along the skull were formed from thin bones and probably served a display or species‑recognition role rather than having a defensive function. Forelimbs were relatively long for a theropod of its time and ended in grasping hands; hind limbs suggest it was capable of active pursuit.

Most recent work treats it as a basal member of the major theropod lineage; comparisons are frequently made with smaller early theropods such as Coelophysis to contrast proportions and ecology.

Paleoecology and behavior

Specimens come from deposits interpreted as low‑lying river systems and floodplains, indicating Dilophosaurus lived in environments with streams and seasonal vegetation (riverine terrain). Anatomy and tooth morphology show it was a carnivore (carnivorous), probably feeding on smaller vertebrates and scavenging when possible. Its build suggests an active, cursorial predator rather than a slow ambush specialist, though direct evidence of hunting behaviour is limited and reconstructions remain cautious.

Cultural impact and misconceptions

Dilophosaurus appears in documentaries and popular media, for example in When Dinosaurs Roamed America, and in other dramatized portrayals (popular media) that have sometimes added unsupported features. Notably, cinematic scenes that show it confronting other species or spitting venom at prey (or sporting a neck frill) are creative inventions; there is no fossil evidence for a venom‑spitting apparatus or a folded frill. Specific dramatizations — such as encounters with small sauropodomorphs like the cinematic Anchisaurus — are reconstructions for entertainment rather than direct fossil observations.

As a whole, Dilophosaurus remains a key taxon for the Early Jurassic: its crests, proportions and depositional context provide useful data on the early evolution of large theropods and on the diversity of predatory strategies soon after the Triassic–Jurassic transition.
