Condorraptor

Condorraptor is a Middle Jurassic megalosauroid theropod from Patagonia, known from fragmentary remains. A mid-sized bipedal predator (~4.5 m), it is often compared to Piatnitzkysaurus and remains incompletely known.

Overview

Condorraptor (literally "robber from Cerro Condor") is a genus of theropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic of Argentina. Known from fragmentary but diagnostic remains, it represents one of the earlier relatively large predatory dinosaurs reported from South America. Reconstructions portray Condorraptor as a bipedal carnivore with a relatively slender build compared with later large theropods.

Anatomy and size

Preserved material attributed to Condorraptor includes vertebrae and elements of the pelvic and hindlimb regions. These bones indicate a gracile but muscular runner with proportions similar to other basal tetanurans. Size estimates based on comparisons with better-known relatives suggest a total length of roughly 4–5 metres and a mass on the order of a few hundred kilograms; such estimates are approximate because the skeleton is incomplete. Diagnostic features are based on vertebral proportions and limb element morphology that help distinguish it from coeval taxa.

Discovery and naming

The type material was recovered from Middle Jurassic strata in the Cerro Condor area of Patagonia. The genus name commemorates that locality.
