Christiaan Huygens (1629–1695) was a Dutch physicist, mathematician and astronomer born in The Hague. His work combined careful observation, mathematical analysis and instrument design. Huygens is best known for advancing an early wave description of light and for practical improvements in precision timekeeping through the pendulum clock.

Life and career

Raised in a prosperous and well-connected family, Huygens moved in the scientific circles of mid-17th century Europe. He published on a range of subjects and corresponded with many leading thinkers of his time. His professional activity included observational astronomy, theoretical studies in mechanics and optics, and the practical construction of telescopes and clocks. He spent much of his life between the Netherlands and France, contributing to early scientific societies.

Major contributions

Huygens formulated what later became known as Huygens' principle: a method for predicting how waves propagate, which influenced later optical theory and was incorporated into the wave picture of light. In astronomy he discovered the large moon Titan in 1655 and made detailed studies of Saturn's rings, arguing that the visible structure was a distinct system around the planet rather than a solid body in contact with it. He summarized his Saturn work in Systema Saturnium.

As an instrument maker Huygens improved refracting telescopes and devised the Huygenian eyepiece to reduce certain optical aberrations; he also investigated the optics of lenses and diffraction. His analysis of oscillatory motion and the invention of the pendulum-regulated clock in the 1650s greatly improved timekeeping, with consequences for navigation and scientific measurement.
