Camptosaurus: Late Jurassic herbivorous ornithopod

Camptosaurus was a medium-sized, plant-eating ornithopod from the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation, notable for its beak, hundreds of teeth, and ability to walk on two or four legs.

Overview

Camptosaurus (literally "bent lizard") was a genus of herbivorous Jurassic dinosaur that lived in what is now western North America during the Late or Upper Jurassic. It is recognized as a member of the broad group of primitive iguanodontian-like ornithopods and is often compared to later relatives such as Iguanodon. Fossils of Camptosaurus come from several partial to near-complete skeletons, which make it one of the better-known small-to-medium Jurassic ornithopods.

Anatomy and locomotion

Camptosaurus was a moderately sized animal, roughly 5–7 metres long and weighing on the order of a tonne. Its skull combined a horny, keratinous beak at the front with leaf-shaped teeth farther back, suited to cropping and processing plant material. It is classified among the ornithischian dinosaurs and showed several adaptations for a mixed stance: longer hind limbs than forelimbs, muscular hips, four-toed feet and five-fingered hands with stout terminal elements. Most paleontologists interpret it as a facultative biped, able to move on two or four legs depending on activity and feeding posture.

Its placement has shifted with research: traditionally grouped with basal iguanodontians, later analyses treat Camptosaurus as a basal member of the iguanodontian-camptosaurid lineage, illustrating the gradual evolution from small, bipedal ornithopods toward the larger, specialized iguanodontians of the Early Cretaceous.

Paleoecology and significance

In its environment Camptosaurus would have been a common mid-sized browser and grazer, feeding on low-lying vegetation and possibly higher foliage when rearing on its hind legs. Its combination of a beak and grinding teeth allowed efficient processing of fibrous plants. Because of multiple well-preserved skeletons, Camptosaurus is important for understanding ornithopod growth, locomotor transitions, and the early stages of iguanodontian evolution.
