When the World Cup campaign of the Republic of Ireland reached public attention in 1990, Mullen co-wrote and co-produced the official team anthem "Put 'Em Under Pressure." Later, he teamed up with U2 bandmate Adam Clayton to record a version of the theme for the 1996 movie Mission: Impossible.

During the inauguration festivities for President Bill Clinton in 1993, Mullen and Clayton performed with Mike Mills and Michael Stipe of R.E.M.. That ad hoc group, billed as "Automatic Baby," played at the MTV's Inaugural Ball as part of the Presidential inauguration events.
