John Michael Stipe (born January 4, 1960) is an American singer-songwriter and visual artist best known as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band R.E.M., with whom he performed from the band's founding in 1980 until its dissolution in 2011. R.E.M. achieved both critical and commercial success, winning multiple awards and earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Stipe's public persona mixed a reserved stage manner with a striking, expressive vocal delivery and often cryptic lyrical style.
