In broad terms, a polar vortex is a circulation of cold air that normally remains near the Arctic. In January 2014, a breakdown or displacement of that circulation — linked to natural variability in the stratosphere and troposphere — allowed extremely cold air to surge south. The event was marked by an amplified jet stream with deep troughs over central and eastern North America, producing prolonged cold and increased temperature contrasts across the continent. Wind chills in some locations reached levels considered dangerously low for exposed skin in minutes.

Extent and notable records

Cold reached well beyond the northern states and provinces: freezing temperatures were reported as far south as Nashville, Tennessee. Some cities recorded historic lows; for example, Chicago O'Hare International Airport registered a temperature near −15 °F (about −26 °C) on January 6, 2014, breaking long-standing records. Transportation systems experienced delays and cancellations, and ice and snow accompanied the cold in many areas, compounding hazards.

Impacts on people and infrastructure

The extreme cold caused multiple interruptions to electricity and heating. Large power outages occurred in parts of Canada and the United States; in one instance a service disruption in Newfoundland left approximately 190,000 customers without power on January 5. Other outages affected nearly 24,000 customers across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Wide-ranging public-sector responses included school closures and restrictions on travel: Minnesota's governor ordered schools closed in several districts, and over fifty counties in Indiana temporarily closed roads to non-emergency traffic.

Human toll and response

Exposure to severe cold contributed to fatalities across North America during the outbreak. Local and state authorities issued warnings, opened warming centers, and advised people to limit travel and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. The episode highlighted vulnerabilities in aging infrastructure and the importance of emergency preparedness for extreme winter conditions.
