X.Org Foundation is a nonprofit organization that coordinates development of the X Window System and the reference server implementations derived from it. The foundation was formed on 22 January 2004 and is incorporated in Delaware as a corporation with a nonprofit purpose.
Purpose and activities
The foundation acts as a community steward: supporting the code base, hosting development infrastructure, and organizing contributions from independent developers and companies. Its work focuses on the open-source X server and related libraries and drivers used to provide the traditional windowing environment on many systems.
Implementations and use
The X.Org Server is the most widely deployed implementation of the X protocol. It runs on Linux, UNIX and other Unix-like operating systems, and serves as the display and input layer for graphical desktop systems. Major desktop environments that rely on X technology include GNOME and KDE, and older environments such as the CDE desktop environment.
Governance and community
Development is community-driven: contributors submit code, documentation, and bug reports, while the foundation provides project governance and infrastructure to coordinate releases and ensure continued maintenance of the software stack.
