Overview

KDE is an international community that produces free and open‑source software for personal computing. Its best known product is the desktop environment KDE Plasma, a graphical shell that presents windows, panels, widgets and session management. KDE software is commonly deployed on operating systems built on the Linux kernel and other Unix‑like platforms, but many applications also run on proprietary systems.

Architecture and components

KDE is organised as a set of cooperating projects rather than a single program. The major components are KDE Plasma (the desktop shell), KDE Frameworks (a collection of libraries used by apps), and a large suite of applications covering tools like file managers, office viewers, multimedia players and development utilities. The window manager and compositor KWin implements effects and windowing policies and historically runs on the X Window System; modern development also supports the Wayland display protocol.

KDE applications are written on top of the Qt toolkit and are released under free software licenses. Many programs have been ported to other environments: they are available on Microsoft Windows and can be built for macOS in many cases, allowing users to run KDE apps across platforms.

History and community

The KDE community formed to create a cohesive, user‑friendly desktop experience for Unix‑like systems. It is supported by a non‑profit organization that helps coordinate releases, infrastructure and events. Development is collaborative and transparent: source code, translations and documentation are maintained by volunteers and contributors worldwide.

Uses, features and distinctions

  • Customisability: Plasma is known for its flexible workflows, themes, panels and small desktop widgets (plasmoids).
  • Modular design: Users can mix and match components—choose different file managers, shells or toolkits—while retaining integration.
  • Cross‑platform apps: KDE applications often run beyond Linux, broadening their reach.
  • Active ecosystem: Regular releases, community events and translations keep the project evolving.

KDE remains one of the prominent free‑software desktop ecosystems, valued for its configurability, rich feature set and broad community support. For official downloads, documentation and project news, consult the project's resources and community pages.
