Overview

The Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek) in Munich is the principal state library of Bavaria and one of Europe's important universal research libraries. It collects across all fields of knowledge and preserves a vast historical heritage. The library serves both a regional public function and an international scholarly role, supporting research, teaching and cultural preservation.

Collections and notable treasures

The library's holdings are extensive and diverse. In mid-2012 its printed holdings were reported at about 9.3 million volumes, supplemented by a large number of manuscripts, maps, music scores and other special collections. Among the approximately 90,000 manuscripts are world-famous medieval and early-modern works that attract scholarly attention.

  • The Codex Aureus, an illuminated gospel book from the tenth century, is one highlight.
  • It preserves one of the surviving versions of the Nibelungenlied, a cornerstone of German medieval literature.
  • The manuscript collection includes the Carmina Burana, a medieval song collection later made famous through musical settings.
  • Its early-print holdings (incunabula) include items of exceptional rarity such as a copy of the Gutenberg Bible.

The library's institutional history spans several centuries and reflects Bavaria's cultural and intellectual development. A key feature of its legal role is a long-standing deposit requirement: a law enacted in 1639 requires that two copies of every work published in Bavaria be provided to the library. This legal-deposit tradition has helped build and preserve a comprehensive record of regional publishing over many generations.

Services, digitization and research use

Beyond preservation, the Bavarian State Library provides reading rooms, reference services and access to catalogs and digitized material for researchers, students and the public. In recent decades the library has undertaken large-scale digitization projects to make manuscripts, early prints and other collections available online, enabling remote scholarly use while protecting fragile originals.

Importance and distinctions

As a universal library with significant historical holdings, the Bavarian State Library is both a national cultural repository and an international research center. Its combination of manuscripts, rare books, maps and musical sources makes it indispensable for medievalists, musicologists, historians of the book and bibliographers. The library also collaborates with academic institutions and participates in national and international library networks.
