Rueun — former municipality in the Surselva region of Graubünden

Geography and characteristics

Rueun occupied a position typical of valleys in Surselva: narrow valley floors opening into mountain slopes, with farmland, pastures and forested areas nearby. The local architecture reflected traditional alpine styles, including stone and timber houses, small chapels and village streets oriented to local topography. Access was by regional roads that link valley settlements and provide connections to larger market towns.

History and 2014 merger

Over time, administrative and financial pressures led many small Swiss communes to consider mergers to improve public services and governance. On 1 January 2014, Rueun and a number of neighbouring municipalities joined together to create the new municipality of Ilanz/Glion. The merger combined local administrations while aiming to retain community identity and local customs.

Language, culture and economy

The cultural life of Rueun reflected the bilingual and bicultural character of Surselva: Romansh (often the Sursilvan variant) and German have coexisted for generations, influencing local festivals, place names and parish life. Economically, the settlement relied on agriculture, alpine pasturing, forestry and small-scale local services. Its scenic setting also made the area attractive for walking, nature tourism and seasonal outdoor activities.

Legacy and contemporary status

After the merger Rueun ceased to exist as an independent municipality but remains a locality and community within Ilanz/Glion. The consolidation aimed to maintain efficient public services while preserving local traditions, architecture and place names. Visitors and researchers interested in regional history, Romansh culture or alpine village life will find Rueun representative of the small communities that shape Graubünden's rural landscape.
