Riein — former Swiss mountain village in Surselva, Graubünden

Location and characteristics

Riein occupied a hillside location above valley floors and alpine pastures, with landscapes shaped by forestry, meadows and mountain streams. The village environment combines traditional stone and timber houses, seasonal alpine farming, and roads connecting it to neighbouring localities in the Surselva region. On 1 January 2014, Riein joined a group of neighbouring municipalities in a municipal merger that created the new municipality of Ilanz/Glion. The merger combined Riein with Castrisch, Ilanz, Luven, Pitasch, Ladir, Ruschein, Schnaus, Sevgein, Duvin, Pigniu, Rueun and Siat.

The cultural life in Riein reflected the multilingual heritage of Graubünden. Communities in Surselva traditionally speak Romansh dialects alongside German, and local customs, festivals and building styles preserve regional identity.
