Rolf Noskwith: Bletchley Park Cryptographer and British Businessman
Rolf Noskwith (1919–2017) was a British businessman and wartime cryptographer who worked under Alan Turing at Bletchley Park. Born in Germany, he emigrated to England and later pursued a long career in business.
Rolf Noskwith (19 June 1919 – 3 January 2017) was a British businessman who earlier in life served as a cryptographer during the Second World War. His wartime work took place at Bletchley Park, where he worked under Alan Turing and contributed to the codebreaking effort as a trained cryptographer. Noskwith later became known for his post-war career in business and for his long life, passing away in London at the age of 97.

Early life and education
Noskwith was born in Chemnitz, in the region of Saxony in what was then Germany. His parents were Eastern European–born Jewish migrants. The family moved to England in 1932, during a period of political upheaval in Germany. He later attended Cambridge, where he received an education that prepared him for technical and analytical work.
Bletchley Park and wartime service
During the war, Noskwith was recruited to work at Bletchley Park, the British centre for signals intelligence and codebreaking. There he joined teams of mathematicians, linguists and engineers who analysed enemy ciphers and developed techniques and machines to break them. Working under senior figures such as Turing, Noskwith was part of a collective effort whose results had a significant, if long classified, impact on Allied intelligence operations.
Post-war career and legacy
After the conflict Noskwith moved into the private sector and established himself as a businessman. Like many veterans of wartime intelligence work, his contributions were not widely publicized for decades because of secrecy. In later years, as histories of Bletchley Park were written and public recognition grew, former codebreakers including Noskwith received greater acknowledgement for their roles in wartime cryptanalysis and the early development of computing-related techniques.
Noskwith's life illustrates the arc of a 20th-century émigré who combined technical skill with commercial activity, and whose wartime service became part of a larger story about intelligence, technology and remembrance.
