Autumn, also called fall in North America, is the transitional season between summer and winter, marked by cooling temperatures, shorter daylight, leaf color change, harvests, migrations and many cultural traditions.
Autumn is the temperate-season transition that follows summer and precedes winter. In many English-speaking countries, especially the United States, it is commonly called "fall." The season is associated with shortening daylight hours, cooling temperatures, and a pronounced shift in natural rhythms visible across plants, animals and human activities. These changes involve physiological shifts in plants that conserve resources before winter.
Animal behaviour also responds to seasonal cues. Many birds migrate to warmer areas or different feeding grounds, mammals increase foraging to build fat reserves, some species store food, and a few prepare for hibernation or torpor. Insects may enter diapause. Weather in autumn often becomes cooler, windier and wetter; frost occurs in many regions and the first freezes mark important agricultural and ecological transitions.

Astronomically, it begins at the autumnal equinox and ends at the winter solstice — in the Northern Hemisphere this typically places the season between September and December, while in the Southern Hemisphere it runs from the equinox in March to the solstice in June. Meteorological definitions instead divide the year into four three-month periods based on average temperatures, often treating September–November or March–May as autumn months.
Some cultures and local climates use practical markers such as the first hard frost, the end of the main harvest, or the timing of festivals to signal the start or finish of autumn. Near the equator seasonal changes are often linked to rainfall patterns rather than temperature or daylight.

Autumn is a key season for agricultural harvests in many temperate regions. Crops such as grains, apples, pumpkins and many vegetables are typically gathered in this period, and farmers prepare fields and livestock for winter. In forests and gardens, the shedding of leaves reduces water loss and the redistribution of sugars and nutrients supports root growth and dormancy.

Autumn’s character is shaped by geography: coastal, mountainous and continental interiors each have distinctive patterns of temperature change, precipitation and the timing of leaf colour. In many places the timing of autumnal events has shifted in recent decades as a result of climate variation: leaves may change later or earlier, growing seasons are shifting, and migration or breeding schedules of animals can be altered. These changes influence agriculture, tourism and conservation planning.
Understanding autumn requires recognition of both predictable astronomical markers and local ecological and cultural markers.
