Human activity affects nesting through habitat loss, introduction of new materials and structures, and direct disturbance. Conservation efforts may include protecting nesting sites, providing artificial nests or boxes, and managing predators. Because nest forms are so diverse, they are useful indicators of behavior and environmental adaptation across animal groups.
