Nagarajan Muthukumar, commonly known as Na. Muthukumar, was a prominent poet and lyricist working in the Tamil film and literary world. Born in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India on 12 July 1975, he became widely respected for his ability to blend literary diction with popular musical forms in the Tamil language. His writing ranged from intimate, emotional songs to pieces that addressed family and social themes.
Career and style
Muthukumar wrote lyrics for many feature films and also published poetry and prose. His song texts were noted for clear imagery, economy of expression and a focus on human relationships rather than elaborate rhetoric. Over his career he collaborated with several leading composers and directors in Tamil cinema, contributing songs that found popular and critical acclaim. He was also known for occasional public readings and literary work beyond film.
Awards and recognition
Among his honours, Muthukumar received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics twice, for the films Thanga Meenkal (2013) and Saivam (2014). He also won multiple Filmfare Awards in the Tamil category and other state and industry recognitions, which affirmed his status as one of the more celebrated contemporary Tamil lyricists.
Notable works
- Thanga Meenkal — awarded work noted for its emotional depth.
- Saivam — recognised for craft and sensitivity in lyric writing.
- Numerous film songs and published poems that remain in circulation and performance.
Muthukumar's output helped bridge literary Tamil and popular song: his lines could be sung by a wide audience while still retaining poetic resonance. He is often cited by younger writers and composers as an influence on contemporary film writing.
Illness and legacy
After suffering from long-term health problems, including prolonged jaundice, Muthukumar died on the morning of 14 August 2016 at his residence in Chennai, reportedly following a cardiac arrest. He was 41. His death prompted tributes from the film and literary communities; his songs continue to be performed, recorded and studied as examples of modern Tamil lyricism.
