Mucous membrane (mucosa)
Mucous membranes line cavities open to the exterior and internal organs. They are made of epithelium, secrete mucus, and perform protection, lubrication, absorption and immune functions.
Overview
A mucous membrane, or mucosa, is a moist, skin-like lining that covers surfaces of the body that communicate with the outside world and many internal organs. It is composed of an epithelial layer (see epithelium) that often overlies a supporting connective tissue. Many mucosae produce a slippery secretion called mucus, and in parts of the alimentary canal the lining is specialized to absorb nutrients. Mucous membranes also cover a range of internal organs, providing a barrier and interface with the environment.

A typical mucosa has several layers: a surface epithelium, a loose connective tissue layer (the lamina propria) that contains blood vessels and immune cells, and sometimes a thin layer of muscle. Secretory glands embedded in or beneath the epithelium contribute fluid and mucins, the large glycoproteins that give mucus its gel-like properties. Mucus contains water, salts, enzymes, and antibodies such as secretory IgA that help neutralize pathogens.
Functions
Mucous membranes perform a combination of mechanical, chemical and immunological tasks. Their main roles include:
- Protection: forming a physical barrier against particulates, microbes and chemical irritants.
- Lubrication: keeping surfaces moist to reduce friction during movement and passage of material.
- Absorption and secretion: taking up nutrients and delivering secretions such as enzymes and mucus.
- Immune defense: hosting specialized immune tissue (for example mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) that samples antigens and mounts local responses.
Common locations and relationships
Mucous membranes line many cavities and tubes, including the respiratory tract, the digestive tract, parts of the urinary and reproductive tracts, and the conjunctiva of the eye. At several points they are contiguous with the outer skin (skin) and form the boundary at body openings such as the nostrils, mouth, lips, eyelids, ears, the genital area, and the anus. The term itself points to where they are found throughout the body. Not all mucosae secrete visible mucus; some remain thin and less secretory depending on function and location.
Clinical relevance and notable facts
Mucous membranes are frequent sites of disease and therapeutic intervention. They can be inflamed (mucositis), infected, dry (as in some systemic disorders), or damaged by irritants and autoimmune conditions. Because they are accessible and richly supplied with blood, some medications and vaccines are delivered across mucosal surfaces (for example sublingual drugs or intranasal vaccines) to achieve local or systemic effects. Mucosal immunity is an important concept in protection against pathogens that enter through these linings.
Distinctions and summary
Unlike the outer skin, many mucosae are non-keratinized and lack hair, and their permeability and secretory activity vary by region. They form a dynamic interface between the body and its environment, combining structural, secretory and immune functions that are essential to health.
