Mississippian (geology)
The Mississippian is the early part of the Carboniferous (about 359–323 million years ago), known for widespread shallow seas, extensive limestone deposition and rich marine fossils; used mainly in North America.
Overview
The Mississippian is the earlier subdivision of the Carboniferous Period, often treated as a distinct geological epoch in North American usage. It lasted from roughly about 359 million years ago to about 323 million years ago, forming the lower half of the Carboniferous interval. Globally, many geologists prefer the single name Carboniferous and refer to its internationally defined stages, but the Mississippian–Pennsylvanian split remains common in North American stratigraphy.

During the Mississippian global sea levels were relatively high and warm shallow seas inundated large continental areas. In what is now North America, these conditions produced thick accumulations of carbonate sediments. The preserved strata are dominated by beds deposited in marine settings, commonly forming extensive limestones and other carbonate rocks that record reefal and platform environments. These marine deposits often show features associated with clear, shallow, warm water and biologically active seafloors.
Life and fossils
The Mississippian fossil record is rich in marine invertebrates. Shoals and reefs hosted abundant crinoids, brachiopods, corals and bryozoans, and microfossils such as foraminifera helped in biostratigraphic correlation. Many limestones are crinoid-rich and have been quarried for building stone. Terrestrial environments were less extensively preserved than in the later Pennsylvanian, but early forests and primitive seed plants were present and continued to diversify.
Subdivisions and terminology
Internationally the Mississippian corresponds approximately to the Tournaisian, Visean and Serpukhovian stages of the lower Carboniferous. Because rock sequences vary regionally, North American geologists historically adopted the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian names to match local stratigraphic successions. Modern stratigraphic practice uses stage-level names where precision is required and retains regional terms where they are useful for mapping and industry.
Economic and scientific importance
Mississippian carbonate platforms are important reservoirs and seals for hydrocarbons where porosity and fracturing occur. They also host karst landscapes and contain economically valuable limestones for construction and lime production. Paleontologists and sedimentologists study Mississippian rocks to reconstruct ancient shallow-marine ecosystems and to understand sea-level and climatic changes across the Carboniferous.
