Arrector pili (hair erector muscle)
Small smooth muscles attached to hair follicles in mammals; contraction causes piloerection (goosebumps), aids sebum release and, in furred species, helps thermoregulation and threat displays.
The arrector pili (plural: arrectores pili) are tiny bands of smooth muscle found in the skin of most mammals. Each muscle links a hair shaft to surrounding connective tissue and is positioned so that when it contracts the hair stands more upright. In humans the effect is visible as the transient bumps known as goosebumps.

Arrector pili are composed of smooth muscle fibers that arise from the dermal layer and insert into the sheath of the hair follicle and nearby dermis. They are relatively short, run obliquely from skin to follicle, and are interspersed with sebaceous glands. Embryologically they develop from mesenchymal tissue associated with the skin.
Function and physiology
Contraction of an arrector pili is triggered by sympathetic nervous activity in response to cold or strong emotions. The resulting piloerection traps a layer of air in well-haired animals, improving insulation, and creates a raised skin surface in humans. Contraction also compresses nearby sebaceous glands, helping to express sebum onto the hair shaft.
In many mammals piloerection plays a role in social and defensive displays: raised fur can make an animal appear larger. In humans the muscles are vestigial—visible mainly as ephemeral goosebumps during chills or emotional states.
