Lake Karachay: a contaminated reservoir near the Mayak nuclear complex

Lake Karachay is a small lake in Russia's southern Ural region that was used to dispose of radioactive waste from the Mayak nuclear complex; it remains one of the most contaminated sites on Earth.

Lake Karachay is a small inland basin in the southern Ural Mountains near the closed city of Ozyorsk in Chelyabinsk Oblast. It lies in the area served by the Mayak nuclear complex, a set of plutonium-production and reprocessing facilities established in the early Soviet atomic program. The lake became known internationally because it was used as a disposal site for high-level radioactive waste originating at Mayak and from releases to the nearby Techa River. Physical characteristics

Karachay is relatively small and shallow compared with natural lakes in the region. Its limited water volume and restricted outflow made it convenient to concentrate liquid and solid radioactive residues there. Contaminants included long-lived radionuclides such as cesium-137 and strontium-90, together with a mixture of other fission products and activation materials generated by reactors and reprocessing operations at Mayak.

History and contamination

Beginning in the early 1950s, operators routed liquid waste from Mayak into local waterways and ultimately into Karachay. Earlier discharges had already contaminated the Techa River and surrounding lands. A serious accidental release at the Mayak site in 1957 (the Kyshtym accident) compounded contamination in the region. Over time the lake accumulated radioactive sediments and became intensely radioactive; some descriptions call it among the most polluted places on Earth.

Health, environment and remediation

The contamination of Karachay posed direct risks from external radiation and from windborne dispersion of dried sediments. Standing at the shore was reported to carry a high short-term radiation risk. Authorities have carried out containment and stabilization measures to limit further spread: waste storage was moved to engineered tanks, and the lakebed has been subject to efforts to cover and fill contaminated sediments to reduce dust and waterborne transfer.
