Józef Oleksy — Polish politician and former prime minister

Early life and background

Oleksy was born in Nowy Sącz in the Lesser Poland region and spent his early years in southern Poland. He trained as an economist and entered public life through the structures of the Polish United Workers' Party, of which he was a member from 1968 until the party's dissolution in 1990. In later life he publicly identified with Roman Catholicism after a period of atheism.

After the fall of communism Oleksy became one of the leading figures of the reconfigured post-communist left. Key points of his career include:

Observers credit him with helping to professionalize post-communist leftist politics while critics point to his earlier communist affiliation and the cloud of the 1996 allegations. He died of cancer on 9 January 2015 in Warsaw, aged 68.
