Mascolo studied at the University of Miami and later at the United States Military Academy before embarking on an acting career. In 2015 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and experienced a serious stroke that same year; these health problems led to his retirement in January 2016. He died in Los Angeles on December 8, 2016, at the age of 87, and was survived by his wife Patricia, his son, a step-daughter and other family members.
