Joseph Mercieca — Archbishop of Malta (1928–2016)

Life and ministry

Mercieca was ordained to the priesthood in the mid-20th century and rose through diocesan responsibilities before being named archbishop. His long ministry combined parish work, administration and public engagement. As archbishop he presided over liturgical celebrations, clergy formation and relations between the Church and civil society in a country where Catholicism plays a central cultural role.

When Mercieca became archbishop he inherited a local church still affected by the fallout from earlier clashes between the hierarchy and political actors.
