Overview
Gorgonopsids were a group of carnivorous therapsids, a branch of synapsid tetrapods closely related to the lineage that produced mammals. They were most diverse during the middle and late Permian and occupied the role of top terrestrial predators in many regions. Typical gorgonopsid features bridge more primitive reptile-like amniotes and later mammal-like conditions. They had a single temporal opening behind the eye (a synapsid trait), powerful jaw musculature, and differentiated teeth adapted for capturing and slicing flesh. The most conspicuous characteristic is the elongated, blade-like upper canines, often described as saber-like, used to deliver deep wounds to prey. Many species show reinforced skull roofs and strong neck attachments to withstand forces generated during a kill.
Size variation
Gorgonopsids ranged considerably in size. Smaller forms were comparable to a large dog, while the largest genera approached the size of a large bear. One frequently cited large genus, Inostrancevia, is known from robust skull material and very large canines; such large species illustrate how gorgonopsids dominated terrestrial predator niches in parts of Palaeozoic ecosystems.
Fossil record and distribution
Fossils of gorgonopsids are best known from Permian deposits in southern Africa and parts of Russia. Limb posture in many forms was intermediate between sprawling reptiles and the more erect gait of later mammals, indicating relatively efficient terrestrial locomotion.
