Early life

Ray was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. Details of his early musical training are modestly documented in public sources, but by the early 1980s he had relocated to the West Coast. In 1982 he moved to San Francisco, California, where he entered a lively independent-music community and began to work with other musicians in recording and touring projects.

Career with Game Theory and The Loud Family

Ray joined Scott Miller's group Game Theory during a period when the band was developing arrangements that blended power-pop hooks with unconventional song structures. As a member he contributed both percussion and backing vocals, helping to anchor the band through studio sessions and tours. When Miller later formed The Loud Family, Ray again served as a core collaborator, reinforcing Miller's compositions with rhythmic clarity and a collaborative attitude.
