This article describes the Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente. For the football club named after him, see Gil Vicente FC.

Gil Vicente (b. c. 1465; † 1536) was a Portuguese playwright whose origins are unclear. He is considered the founder of the national theatre and one of the outstanding writers of the Portuguese language. His extensive works include 46 plays, of which 16 were written in Portuguese, 11 in Castilian (Spanish), and the remaining 19 in both languages.

He is considered a profound thinker as well as a biting satirist. His work is a rich source for the study of the Portuguese language, contemporary customs and the social life of the era.

Much about the actual person of Gil Vicente is still unclear and will probably remain so forever. It is not clear, for example, whether the writer and the well-known goldsmith of the same name were one and the same person. The masterpiece of the latter is the famous monstrance of the Hieronymos Monastery in Belém (Lisbon).

The writer's daughter, Paula, contributed to the arrangement of his work, the first complete compilation of which did not appear until 1562.
