Overview
Gibbsite is a naturally occurring aluminium hydroxide with the nominal chemical formula Al(OH)3. It is one of several mineral forms of aluminium hydroxide and is an important constituent of bauxite, the principal ore from which aluminium is extracted. Historically it has also been called hydrargillite or hydrargyllite. The mineral is commonly referenced in mineralogical literature and by industry as a key aluminium-bearing phase (mineral).
Structure and physical characteristics
Gibbsite forms layered sheets of aluminium octahedra coordinated by hydroxyl groups; these sheets stack and are held together by hydrogen bonding. That layered arrangement gives gibbsite a tendency to form soft, often earthy to scaly aggregates rather than well-developed large crystals. It typically has a low hardness and a specific gravity that reflects its hydroxide composition. Color ranges from white to gray, sometimes taking pale hues from impurities.
Occurrence and formation
Gibbsite commonly forms by intense chemical weathering (lateritization) of aluminium-rich silicate rocks in tropical and subtropical climates. It is a dominant mineral in many bauxite deposits, where it may coexist with other aluminium-bearing phases. In addition to natural settings, gibbsite or closely related phases precipitate during industrial processing of bauxite in the refining of alumina.
Industrial importance and uses
As a principal component of bauxite, gibbsite is a major source of aluminium metal. In the Bayer process, aluminium is recovered by dissolving aluminium-bearing minerals in caustic soda and then precipitating aluminium hydroxide; precipitated material is often gibbsite-like and is subsequently heated (calcined) to produce alumina (Al2O3), the feedstock for aluminium smelting. Beyond ore processing, aluminium hydroxides derived from gibbsite are used as flame retardants, fillers and in some chemical applications.
Related minerals and distinctions
Gibbsite is one of several polymorphs and related phases of aluminium hydroxide. Other Al(OH)3 polymorphs include bayerite and nordstrandite, while aluminium oxyhydroxides such as boehmite and diaspore (AlO(OH)) are distinct but commonly occur in the same bauxite deposits. Recognizing these differences is important in geology and refining because reactivity and processing behavior vary by mineral species.
History and notable facts
The name gibbsite honors the American mineral collector George Gibbs (1777–1834). The older term hydrargillite derives from roots meaning "water" and "clay." In practice, material described as gibbsite may appear in hand specimens, core samples and industrial residues; mineralogists and engineers study its texture, purity and association with other phases to assess ore quality and processing options.
