Overview

Fenella Fielding (17 November 1927 – 11 September 2018) was an English stage, film and television actress celebrated for a distinctive husky voice, glamorous stage presence and an often saucy comic persona. Prominent in the 1950s and 1960s, she became popularly associated with the cheeky, innuendo-driven humour of postwar British entertainment and was widely described in the press as "England's first lady of the double entendre." Her career spanned repertory theatre, West End revues, radio, television and film, and she continued to work in character roles into later life.

Early life and training

Fielding was born in London and began her acting work in repertory companies and theatrical training that prepared her for a range of stage roles. Her early experience on stage and in revue established the precise comic timing and vocal style that would become her trademark. Biographical summaries and career surveys are available through dedicated reference entries and archives (biographical source).

Theatre, film and television career

Her theatrical work included dramatic roles as well as revue and musical performances, where her combination of glamour and comic timing proved effective. On screen, Fielding appeared in two entries of the long-running Carry On series: Carry On Regardless (1961) and the parody-horror Carry On Screaming! (1966). She also reached new audiences by playing The Vixen in the children's action series Uncle Jack (1990–1993) and by appearing with a younger generation of comic performers in the anarchic film Guest House Paradiso (1999), alongside Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson.

Style, voice and public image

Fielding's public persona combined a richly timbred, husky speaking voice with an arch, theatrical delivery. That voice became a signature: it could be used for straight drama, voice work and deliberately suggestive comedy. Critics and peers noted her versatility in switching between camp, dramatic and musical modes, and her presence remained recognisable across many media.

Honours and family

For her contributions to the performing arts Fielding was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). She came from a family that included her brother, Basil Feldman, later created Baron Feldman, who sat in the House of Lords; biographical references link her London background with family details (London; see also Basil Feldman and his connection to the House of Lords).

Later years and death

Fielding continued to make public appearances and occasional performances into her later years, and newer audiences discovered her work through television repeats and film retrospectives. In August 2018 she suffered a severe stroke and was hospitalised; contemporary reporting covered her condition (news report). She died on 11 September 2018 at the age of 90. Her contribution to mid-20th-century British comedy is remembered for its distinct voice, comic timing and the saucy theatricality she brought to a changing entertainment landscape.
