Dryosaurus was lightly built, with a long tail for balance and long hind limbs suited to rapid running. Its jaws contained finely packed cheek teeth organized for cropping and slicing vegetation rather than heavy grinding. Hands were relatively small but capable of grasping. Key features include:

Discovery and classification

Members of this family appear in the fossil record from the Middle Jurassic through the Lower Cretaceous, showing evolutionary trends toward larger size and more complex chewing mechanisms.
Environment and paleobiology
Dryosaurus lived in a world of rivers, seasonal wetlands and conifer-dominated forests. Its anatomy indicates a primarily bipedal gait and the ability to flee predators by sprinting. As a herbivore it likely fed on ferns, cycads and other low vegetation, using its beak to crop plant material and its teeth for shearing. Juveniles and adults may have differed in proportions, as is common in many ornithopods.
Significance and distinctions
Although not as large or famous as later iguanodontians and hadrosaurs, Dryosaurus is important for understanding the early evolution of ornithopods. Its combination of speed, light build and dental specialization illustrates transitional stages between small bipedal herbivores and the larger, more specialized grazers that followed.
