The diatonic scale is a seven-note (heptatonic) sequence of pitch classes that underpins much of Western melodic and harmonic practice. Its defining intervallic pattern within each octave consists of five whole steps and two half steps, arranged so that the half steps are separated by either two or three whole steps. The word "diatonic" derives from the ancient Greek term for progressing through tones and traditionally denotes the seven-note collection of pitch classes used in many musical systems.

Structure and construction

One practical way to visualize a diatonic collection is as two tetrachords (four-note segments) separated by a whole tone. Alternatively, the seven notes of any diatonic scale can be obtained by stacking six consecutive perfect fifths and reducing them into a single octave; this method is historically associated with scales tuned by pure fifths. For example, the natural pitches C–D–E–F–G–A–B form the C major scale, a familiar diatonic pattern often represented on piano white keys. That same seven-note pattern can be transposed to begin on any pitch to produce other diatonic scales: musicians call those transpositions.

Common forms and modes

The diatonic collection yields seven distinct modal starting points, historically known as the church modes. These are commonly named Ionian (the modern major scale), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian (natural minor), and Locrian. Each mode preserves the sequence of five whole steps and two half steps but starts on a different degree, producing characteristic melodic flavors used across genres from chant to folk and pop. The natural minor (Aeolian) and major (Ionian) are the most widely recognized diatonic forms.

Uses, harmony and importance

The diatonic scale supplies the building blocks for much tonal harmony: triads and seventh chords built from scale degrees produce the primary functional relationships in major and minor tonal music. Melodies based on diatonic notes tend to have strong tonal centers and clear cadential gestures. Instrument design—most notably the modern piano keyboard—reflects the prominence of diatonic patterns, with the white keys approximating a natural diatonic collection in many common tunings.

Not every seven-note or heptatonic scale is diatonic in the strict sense. Some heptatonic scales alter the spacing of whole and half steps in ways that break the characteristic diatonic pattern. Examples of collections that fall outside the diatonic pattern include the whole-tone scale and certain exotic or folk collections such as the scales often labeled gypsy. Jazz and modern music also use altered or synthetic seven-note collections; many jazz players draw on modes derived from melodic minor and other heptatonic sources, while some altered-tone scales are used for color and tension in improvisation, particularly in jazz.
