Preparation and chemical behavior

Another common route reduces chromate salts to the trivalent state using sulfur dioxide or other reducing agents (chromates, sulfur dioxide). The product can exist in multiple hydrated forms and may change color with hydration state and temperature; for example, some forms become greener on heating.

Properties

As a Cr(III) salt, chromium(III) sulfate typically shows colors ranging from violet to green depending on water content and crystal structure. It is generally soluble in water and forms stable complexes with ligands. In aqueous solutions chromium(III) behaves as a relatively inert cation compared with Cr(VI).

  • Leather tanning: the principal application is chrome tanning, where basic chromium sulfate and related Cr(III) salts produce durable, flexible leather (leather).

Safety and environmental notes

Chromium(III) sulfate is an irritant and should be handled with appropriate protective equipment. Although Cr(III) is considerably less toxic and less mobile in the environment than hexavalent chromium, care is required to avoid oxidation to Cr(VI) under certain conditions and to prevent release of chromium-containing wastes to waterways. Appropriate industrial controls and waste-treatment practices are standard.

Chromium(III) sulfate is part of a wider family of chromium salts used since the 19th century in tanning and dyeing.
