Composition and properties

The combination produces a hard but workable material that can be cut, polished and dyed. Key characteristics include flammability, sensitivity to heat and light, and gradual chemical breakdown that can produce acidic byproducts and off‑gassing. Despite these drawbacks, its surface finish and ability to accept colors made it attractive for decorative and consumer applications.

History and development

Early experiments with nitrocellulose derivatives in the mid‑19th century led to several trade names and formulations. Under different names and patents it was commercialized and improved, becoming widely manufactured by the late 1800s. Manufacturers promoted it as a substitute for scarce or expensive natural materials because it could be produced consistently and ornamented in ways that natural materials could not.

Celluloid was used for many everyday products where hard, polished surfaces were desired. Typical uses included billiard balls and other game pieces marketed as an ivory replacement, jewelry, combs, and early motion picture and still photography film base (photographic film). In more recent decades small durable items such as guitar picks and some sports balls—most notably certain table tennis balls—have continued to use celluloid or celluloid‑like formulations.

Decline, hazards and legacy

Celluloid's widespread decline resulted from its high flammability, chemical instability, and the development of safer, more durable synthetic polymers. Decomposition can damage stored objects and archival film, making preservation difficult. Nevertheless, celluloid played a pivotal role in early consumer manufacturing and the emergence of the modern plastics industry, and it remains a notable material in the history of technology and design.
