Washington Roebling fell ill as a result of working in the pressurized caissons used to sink the tower foundations; his wife, Emily Warren Roebling, subsequently assumed a central role in communicating instructions, managing technical information and representing the project in public and official matters. The construction demonstrated both the promise and the hazards of 19th-century engineering: many workers experienced decompression sickness while working in caissons, and the project required sustained technical innovation and management to reach completion in 1883.

Throughout its history the Brooklyn Bridge has carried pedestrians, horse-drawn vehicles, streetcars in earlier eras, and modern vehicular traffic.
