  • Mountain or southern viscacha (Lagidium viscacia): Very similar in habits and ecology to the northern viscacha but often described as having warmer or slightly more reddish tones in the coat. It occupies high-elevation Andean habitat in parts of the southern range of the genus and shares many behavioural traits with L. peruanum.
  • Wolffsohn's viscacha (Lagidium wolffsohni): A rarer and less well-known species with a more restricted or patchy distribution. Field data on its ecology and population trends are limited, and it is consequently less well described in the literature than the other three species.

Physical characteristics

Viscachas have compact, muscular bodies with strong hind limbs adapted for hopping and short leaps across rock and grassland. Their tails are long and often bushy, providing balance and insulation.
