Together at Home
One World: Together at Home
Together at Home was a worldwide TV and live streaming event run by the NGO Global Citizen in support of the World Health Organization and all the people on the front lines of the fight against the corona virus. At the same time, the aim was to call on governments and major donors to support the work of the World Health Organization in the Corona crisis.
This event was announced by the WHO on April 6, 2020 and was co-organized by Hugh Evans - CEO of Global Citizen - and Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga and a small team of employees had already gone into domestic quarantine several weeks beforehand to prepare for the event. On 17 April, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus specifically singled out Lady Gaga in his announcement of the participation of the world's leading musicians - "... the result of a close collaboration with my good friend Hugh Evans [...] and the inspirational Lady Gaga ...". By its own account, Global Citizen had already raised $35 million in donations at the time. Lady Gaga stressed in an April 6 YouTube video exchange with Jimmy Fallon that this was not a "televised fundraiser" - "... it's not a telethon it's not a fundraiser ..." - and it was to celebrate the courage of the human spirit - "... it's to celebrate the courage of the human spirit".
On April 18, a six-hour "pre-show" began, the online portion of which was streamed on YouTube and elsewhere. It was hosted by different artists for an hour at a time. These were Jameela Jamil in hour one, Matthew McConaughey in hour two and Danai Gurira in hour three. Singer Becky G followed as the fourth hour host, Laverne Cox in hour five and Don Cheadle in hour six. This was immediately followed by the worldwide television broadcast, which was presented by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.
Industry publication Variety pointed out that this is one of the few times in history that three leading US broadcast networks - NBC, CBS and ABC - have joined forces to broadcast the same charity-focused event. It was also the first time that so many digital platforms were involved, from Apple Music to Twitter to YouTube.
In the German-speaking countries, the television broadcast was made by ZDFneo, RTL, MTV and Comedy Central.
