Geography and environment

Sussex sits in the northwestern corner of the state near the boundary with neighboring states; it forms part of New Jersey's Skylands Region and includes ridges of the Appalachian system such as the Kittatinny Ridge. The landscape includes upland forests, river valleys and several reservoirs and lakes that supply water and recreation. Much of the county drains toward the Delaware River watershed. The county's setting within the state gives it a more rural character than the urban corridors farther south.

History and development

The area was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples and later settled by Europeans in the colonial era. In the 18th and 19th centuries the county developed agriculture, small-scale industry and iron mining in parts of the region. Over time transportation improvements and changing economies shaped its towns, but Sussex has retained a comparatively rural profile compared with much of New Jersey.
