Steinfurt is a rural district (Kreis) in the northern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and in the country of Germany. The district administration is based in the town of Steinfurt, and the area mixes lowland Münsterland landscapes with the foothills of the Teutoburg Forest. Several medium-sized towns, including Rheine, Ibbenbüren, Greven and Emsdetten, provide local economic and cultural centers.
Geography and municipalities
Steinfurt covers agricultural plains, wooded hills and river valleys. The Ems River runs through parts of the district and contributes to a network of canals, streams and fertile farmland typical of the region. The district contains a number of towns and smaller municipalities; larger urban centers serve as hubs for services, light industry and transport, while much of the territory remains rural.
History and administration
The modern district developed through administrative reforms in the 20th century that reorganized older counties and municipalities into the present Kreis. Local government is responsible for schools, roads, social services and regional planning. Municipal cooperation and a tradition of local civic associations are characteristic of public life.
Economy and transport
The local economy combines agriculture, manufacturing by small and medium-sized enterprises, logistics and services. Steinfurt benefits from good transport connections: rail links and highways connect it with the nearby cities of Münster and Osnabrück, and Münster Osnabrück Airport (Flughafen Münster/Osnabrück) is located close to Greven, supporting both business and tourism.
Culture, nature and points of interest
Visitors and residents find historic market towns, manor houses, cycling routes across Münsterland and trails into the wooded slopes near Ibbenbüren. Cultural events, local museums and regional culinary traditions reflect the district's mix of rural heritage and industrial development.
