Stockholm County

Geography

The county contains a mix of city districts, commuter towns, forests and a widely known archipelago with numerous islands and islets along the Baltic coast. Coastal and inland landscapes shape local recreation and settlement patterns, while waterways and bridges form important transport links between islands and the mainland.

History and development

Since its foundation in the early eighteenth century, Stockholm County’s boundaries and administrative tasks have evolved as the capital grew. Industrialisation, urban expansion and national reforms gradually shifted responsibilities from centralised state administration toward locally elected bodies and modern regional institutions.

Administration and public services

Governance is split between the state’s County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) and the directly elected regional council, commonly referred to as Region Stockholm. The regional council manages healthcare and hospitals, public transport and larger-scale planning; municipalities handle schools, local planning and many social services. Economy and transport

The county is Sweden’s economic core, hosting major universities, research institutions and businesses in finance, technology and life sciences. Well‑developed public transport networks include the metro (Tunnelbana), commuter rail, buses and ferry services in the archipelago. The main international airport serving the region is Arlanda, connected by road and rail to the capital.

Culture, education and tourism

Stockholm County is rich in cultural institutions, museums and historic sites, and it supports several leading universities and medical centres. The mix of historic streets, modern districts and island landscapes makes the region a national focal point for tourism, cultural events and academic research.

Municipal structure and identity

The county comprises many municipalities of varying size and character, from dense central neighbourhoods to coastal communities and rural areas. Administratively it should not be confused with the separate entity of Stockholm municipality; the county is the larger regional unit responsible for coordinating services across the metropolitan area.
