A spiracle is an external opening on the body that provides a passage for air or water into internal respiratory structures. The term is most commonly applied to the paired breathing holes of many insects and some spiders, and also to the small openings behind the eyes of certain fishes such as sharks and rays. In terrestrial arthropods, spiracles connect to a network of tubes called tracheae and finer tracheoles that distribute gases directly to tissues. Spiracles are often arranged in pairs along the thorax and abdomen and can be muscularly controlled: animals open them to admit air and close them to limit water loss or to keep out dust and pathogens. In fishes such as many bottom-dwelling sharks and rays, the spiracle is a vestigial first gill slit that allows water to be drawn into the gill chamber when the animal is stationary or buried in sediment.
In arthropods
Many insects rely on spiracles as part of their tracheal respiratory system. Air enters through one or more pairs of spiracles and diffuses through tracheae to reach cells directly, a system that removes the need for lungs. Control of spiracle opening helps balance oxygen uptake with the risk of dehydration; some species exhibit rhythmic opening patterns or active ventilation movements in larger, more active insects. In fishes and other vertebrates
Among cartilaginous fishes, a spiracle is located behind each eye in many sharks and rays. It acts as an auxiliary intake for water to flow over the gills, which is especially useful when the animal is resting on the sea floor or when the mouth is occupied.
