Overview

The Seal of Rhode Island is the official emblem used to authenticate documents and represent the state government. Visually it centers on an anchor beneath the word HOPE on a dark blue field, and is encircled by a legend that has historically read "Seal of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." The date 1636 is commonly shown at the base, a reference to the founding of Providence.

Elements and design

  • Anchor: The central symbol, reflecting seafaring, commerce and security; anchor imagery has been used since colonial times.
  • Motto: The single word HOPE, placed above the anchor.
  • Field and colors: A dark blue background often frames the anchor and motto.
  • Outer legend and date: An encircling inscription names the state and historically includes the phrase "and Providence Plantations;" the year 1636 marks Providence's origin.

The seal is closely associated with the state's identity: it appears on official stationery, government buildings and many civic emblems. Images of the seal are also reproduced on the state flag, lapel pins, and on certain official documents to indicate authenticity.

History and symbolism

The anchor and the motto grew out of early colonial and maritime culture in the region. Variations of the motif were used long before Rhode Island achieved statehood, evolving from seals and devices used by colonial authorities and local towns. The anchor is commonly interpreted as a symbol of hope and steadfastness and also recalls the importance of fishing, shipping and trade to the island and coastal communities.

Over time the wording and presentation of the outer legend have been re-evaluated in the context of changing political and cultural attitudes; references to "Providence Plantations" have been the subject of public discussion and alteration in modern usage. Official reproductions may therefore show slight differences in wording, color or ornament while retaining the anchor-and-HOPE motif.
