Overview
Salmonella enterica is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium in the genus Salmonella. The species is subdivided into many subspecies and serovars; some cause systemic illness in humans while others primarily produce self-limited gastrointestinal infection. One serovar, Typhi, is the principal cause of typhoid fever, a distinct clinical syndrome from the more common non-typhoidal salmonellosis.

S. enterica is a facultative anaerobe with peritrichous flagella that enable motility. It grows on standard laboratory media and can be identified by culture, biochemical tests and serological typing. Many serovars are adapted to particular animal hosts; others have broad host ranges. The bacterium can survive for periods in water, soil and foods under favorable conditions and may persist within host cells such as macrophages in systemic infections.
Transmission and clinical features
Transmission is typically by the fecal–oral route: ingestion of contaminated water or food is the most common pathway. Drinking or swallowing contaminated water has long been recognized as a key source (waterborne transmission). Common food vehicles include undercooked poultry and eggs, raw produce, and foods handled after contamination. Clinical manifestations vary by serovar. Typhoid fever, caused by S. Typhi, presents with prolonged fever, headache, abdominal discomfort and sometimes constipation, diarrhea or characteristic rash; gastrointestinal salmonellosis from non-typhoidal serovars causes nausea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and often fever (fever) that is usually self-limited in otherwise healthy people.
Diagnosis, treatment and prevention
Diagnosis is made by isolating the organism from blood, stool or other clinical specimens and by serotyping or molecular tests. Management of non-typhoidal gastroenteritis focuses on rehydration and supportive care; antibiotics are reserved for severe cases or vulnerable patients. Typhoid fever often requires specific antimicrobial therapy guided by susceptibility testing. Preventive measures include safe water and sanitation, proper food handling and cooking, and vaccination options for S. Typhi where indicated.
Public health importance and control
S. enterica remains a major cause of foodborne illness worldwide and is a priority for surveillance and outbreak control. Measures such as improved hygiene, monitoring of food production, and rapid detection of outbreaks reduce disease burden. Chronic carriage in some individuals can perpetuate transmission, making identification and management of carriers important in elimination strategies.
