Rifai (Rifa'i) Sufi Order

Origins and early history

Founded in the 12th century in what is now Iraq, the Rifai order combined elements of asceticism and popular devotion. From its beginnings it attracted followers from urban and rural backgrounds and established zawiyas (lodges) where instruction, hospitality, and collective worship were practiced. Over centuries the order adapted to local contexts while keeping central themes of humility and service.

Practices and characteristics

• Dhikr: rhythmic repetition of God’s names and litanies in groups.
• Service: support for the poor and hospitality to travelers.
• Ascetic training: emphasis on self-discipline, prayer, and moral reform.
• Rituals: some branches developed distinctive ceremonies and physical expressions of devotion.

Rifai practice varies widely between regions. In some communities ceremonial displays—long associated in popular memory with the order—have included dramatic forms of ritual endurance. Scholars note that such displays are not uniform and are shaped by local custom and later popular religion.

Spread and modern presence

The order expanded beyond Iraq into the Levant, Anatolia, Egypt and the Balkans. It maintains a visible presence in contemporary Turkey and parts of Eastern Europe, where historical lodges and devotional networks continue to transmit teachings. In modern times Rifai communities engage with broader Muslim institutions while preserving traditional modes of spiritual training.

Today the Rifai tariqa is studied as part of the wider Sufi heritage: historically influential in shaping popular devotional life and notable for its emphasis on humility, communal remembrance, and social service. Variations in ritual and emphasis reflect the order’s long adaptation to diverse cultural settings.
