Territory and structure

The archdiocese is organized around parish communities, deaneries, and diocesan offices that coordinate pastoral care, education and social outreach. It functions as a metropolitan see with two suffragan dioceses: the Diocese of Calgary and the Diocese of Saint Paul. The local ordinary (archbishop) leads the archdiocese; since 2008 the archbishop has been Richard William Smith, who oversees liturgical life, clergy assignments and diocesan ministries.

History and development

Established in the early 20th century, the jurisdiction grew as settlements expanded across Alberta. Over the decades the Catholic population and its institutions — parishes, schools and charitable agencies — increased alongside urban development in and around Edmonton. The archdiocese has adapted to demographic change, responding to urban, suburban and rural pastoral needs while maintaining ties to Indigenous communities and immigrant congregations.

Functions, institutions and ministries

The archdiocese supports a range of services and organizations that serve both Catholics and the broader public. Typical components include:

  • Pastoral ministry in parish life, sacramental preparation and faith formation;
  • Catholic education and support for school boards and faith-based programs;
  • Charitable outreach, social services and refugee assistance;
  • Vocations promotion, clergy formation and lay ministry development;
  • Ecumenical and interfaith engagement within the wider community.

Cathedral and notable features

St. Joseph's Basilica serves as the archbishop's seat and is a prominent liturgical and cultural landmark in Edmonton. The basilica hosts major diocesan liturgies, ordinations and civic events. Across the archdiocese, parishes range from historic urban churches to mission stations in remote areas, reflecting the geographic and cultural diversity of central Central Alberta and the Rockies.

The Archdiocese of Edmonton plays a significant role in regional religious life, education and social care, balancing pastoral responsibilities with initiatives that address contemporary social challenges and foster community ties.
