Overview

The Patrouille de France, commonly abbreviated PAF, is the official aerobatic demonstration unit of the French Air Force. As an aerobatics demonstration team, it performs precision formation flying at public ceremonies, commemorations and airshows, showcasing pilot skill, teamwork and the French national colours.

Aircraft and colours

The team flies variants of the Alpha Jet, a light jet trainer developed through a Franco-German cooperative program; the specific platform used for demonstrations is widely referred to as the Alpha Jet trainer. PAF jets are finished with smoke systems that trace the national palette: blue, white and red, the same tricolour shown on the French flag. These colours are a visual signature during flypasts and aerobatic sequences.

History and development

The Patrouille de France dates from the mid‑20th century and evolved from earlier military display groups. Over decades it has adapted to new aircraft, larger audiences and modern airshow standards while preserving traditions of formation discipline, ceremonial roles and public outreach. Its routine and organizational structure have been refined through continuous training and operational experience.

Typical displays and manoeuvres

PAF demonstrations combine tight formations, dramatic crossovers and coordinated smoke effects. Typical elements include:

  • Close formation flying (diamond and echelon formations)
  • High‑speed passes and opposing crossovers
  • Solo manoeuvres that highlight agility and engine response
  • Precision rendezvous and synchronised rolls with tricolour smoke

Organisation, training and safety

Pilots selected for the Patrouille de France are experienced military aviators who undergo a specialised training cycle to master formation discipline and public display procedures. Emphasis is placed on predictable teamwork, strict safety protocols and meticulous maintenance of aircraft and smoke systems to ensure both spectacular and safe demonstrations.

Importance and public role

Beyond airshows, the PAF serves as a symbol of national pride and military professionalism. Its appearances at national holidays, state visits and international events function as soft diplomacy and recruitment inspiration. Long recognised for its distinctive livery and disciplined routines, the Patrouille de France remains one of Europe’s best-known precision flying teams.
