History and development

Military aviation in France originated before World War I within the army's aviation service. Over the interwar period the service expanded, professionalized and acquired an independent identity. It played major roles in both world wars and the decolonisation conflicts that followed. In the post‑war era the force adapted to jet technology, Cold War requirements and later expeditionary operations. In recent years its mission set has broadened to include space-related activities and close integration with allied air forces.
