Paspels (former municipality in Graubünden, Switzerland)
Paspels was a small municipality in the Hinterrhein district of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It merged with nearby villages in 2015 to form the municipality of Domleschg.
Overview
Paspels (Romansh: Pasqual) was a small Swiss locality that until 2015 functioned as an independent municipality. It lay within the administrative district of Hinterrhein in the canton of Graubünden (Grisons), in the southeastern part of Switzerland. Like many settlements in the region, Paspels combined a rural character with access to the mountain landscapes and transit corridors that connect the Alpine valleys.

The former municipality occupied a compact area typical of small Alpine villages: a mix of cultivated land, woodland and built-up hamlet clusters. Buildings reflect traditional local architecture and the settlement served as a focal point for nearby farms and hamlets. The setting offers opportunities for outdoor recreation and seasonal activities that are common across Graubünden, including walking routes and countryside tourism.
History and municipal merger
Paspels had a long local history as a self-governing community within cantonal structures. As part of a broader trend in Switzerland to streamline local administration and improve public services, it joined a voluntary municipal consolidation. On 1 January 2015 the municipalities of Paspels and its neighbours Almens, Pratval, Rodels and Tomils merged to create the new municipality of Domleschg. The merger combined administrative tasks while preserving much of each village’s local identity.
Language, culture and economy
The area reflects the multilingual and multicultural character of Graubünden, where Romansh and German are widely used alongside other national languages. Economically, communities like Paspels have relied historically on agriculture, pastoralism and small-scale commerce; in recent decades, tourism and service activities have become increasingly important. Local festivals, church life and village associations continue to play a central role in community life.
Significance and notable facts
Although small in size, Paspels illustrates common features of many Swiss mountain villages: a blend of historical continuity, linguistic diversity and adaptation to modern administrative structures. After the 2015 merger the name Paspels remains in local use as a place name and neighbourhood within the larger municipality of Domleschg, while historical records and local heritage preserve its distinct past. For administrative and statistical records one should consult the new municipal entity or cantonal registries for up-to-date information.
