Geography and built environment

The village occupied a compact site typical of the Domleschg valley, with steep slopes, terraced fields and a small nucleus of traditional houses clustered around a chapel or church. Local architecture combined stone foundations and timber framing, reflecting alpine building traditions. Surrounding areas include orchards, pastureland and forested slopes used for grazing and wood supply.

History and administrative change

Historically Almens functioned as an independent municipality with local councils and communal land management. On 1 January 2015 Almens joined a municipal consolidation intended to improve public services and administrative efficiency. The former municipalities that merged are listed below.

Economy, language and culture

The local economy was traditionally based on agriculture, small-scale fruit growing, and services linked to valley traffic.
