Pratval: former Swiss municipality in the Domleschg region of Graubünden

Location and geography

Pratval lies in a valley landscape of meadows, orchards and wooded slopes typical of the inner Alpine region. History and name

The village has medieval origins and its place name reflects the agricultural past: the root prat- derives from Latin pratum, meaning meadow, a common toponymic element in this part of the Alps. Over centuries Pratval shared the historical patterns of parish organisation and local self-government common across Graubünden until modern municipal consolidation reduced the number of separate administrations.

Following the merger, local public services and administration are managed by the larger municipal authority of Domleschg, which coordinates planning, utilities and communal services for several neighbouring villages. The local language is predominantly German, in keeping with much of the Domleschg valley, while the wider canton of Graubünden is multilingual. Pratval retains a village identity even as administrative functions are centralised.
