Overview

The Order of Prince Henry is a modern Portuguese honor instituted to recognize individuals who render distinguished services in promoting Portugal, its history and culture, or in strengthening relations between Portugal and other countries. It may be conferred on Portuguese citizens and on foreign nationals. The order bears the name of Henry the Navigator, the 15th-century prince associated with early Portuguese maritime exploration.

History and purpose

Created in 1960, the order commemorated the era of Portuguese overseas expansion and the legacy of exploration. Since its foundation it has been used as an instrument of national recognition and cultural diplomacy, celebrating achievements in fields such as scholarship, the arts, science, commerce and public service that contribute to the projection of Portuguese identity abroad.

Structure and insignia

The order is organized in a hierarchy of classes, with distinctions that reflect the rank or significance of the award. Typical grades include:

The Order of Prince Henry is one of several Portuguese orders of merit. It is distinct from orders that emphasize political, military or civic virtues, such as the Order of Liberty or the Order of Merit, each of which has its own focus and eligibility rules. As an instrument of soft power, the Order of Prince Henry plays a role in state visits and official recognitions abroad.
