Overview

The Neva is a short but hydraulically significant river in northwestern Russia. At about 74 kilometres long, it drains Lake Ladoga and discharges into the Gulf of Finland. Despite its modest length, the Neva carries a large volume of water and forms a broad, flat delta where the city of Saint Petersburg grew along its banks.
